Adventure Time: Baler Escapade

Millenium Tree

Ditumabo Mother Falls

Baler is said to be "second-class municipality in the province of Aurora, Philippines." It is the provincial capital of Aurora.

It’s a province named after the lady-love and wife of President Manuel Quezon. How utterly romantic. The province itself is one of the last frontiers of Central Luzon. With 70% forest cover and 328 kilometers of pure coast, it has gems yet to be discovered. From Baliuag, Bulacan we drove all the way to Baler for 4 hours and 30 minutes. We were excited to what Baler has to offer. First stop is the Sabang Beach which is well known for surfing. We rented a surf board along with the surf instructor and it costs 150 pesos an hour. I must say that it is so hard to balance on board, my son also tried it. To my surprise after the first try, He did it!

We went to Baler Museum (Museo de Baler) which showcases the rich history of Baler, Aurora. Next stop is the house of Dona Aurora (wife of President Manuel Quezon) just across the church near the plaza. The house has a Presidential Black Limousine. If one is on tight budget, this is one worth seeing even without getting inside for entrance fee. It is very native and Filipino. Another sight to see is the eerie and somewhat creepy "Millenium Tree" or better know as the Giant Balete tree amidst papaya plantations near Maria Aurora Village. It is a 60-65m tall and some 60 adult are needed to get their arms around this incredible tree. This Millenium tree is one of the largest trees in the world. After that we traveled through the roads which lead us to the Ditumabo Falls or "Mother Falls". Geographically speaking, Ditumabo (Mother falls) is situated in the town of San Luis. Getting there is not easy. You need to do an hour of trekking, river crossings and the trail is generally rocky, rough and slippery (especially after the rain). Those are the challenges that you will face before you can see the majestic waterfalls. But, It is very rewarding!

And also, how can I forget to eat! Baler, Aurora is rich in seafood. In Baler, you cannot find big fast food chains and restaurants which is popular in the metro. But they have "Carinderias" where you can eat their seafood! Yes, they have lobsters, huge crabs, tuna, salmon, and this is what travelers are looking forward to. We ate those and not to forget their yummy "Coco Turon" that I really love! Surely, we will be back to do more surfing and adventure as we didn't experience all of their falls and beaches yet.

Their famous Coco Turon
